Spectacular Waterfalls

Waterfalls are a great attraction year around. Enjoy the beautiful foliage in the Fall, or a refreshing swim in the summer.

On the way to Highlands from Baloo’s Cabin in the Nantahala National Forest, along the Mountain-Scenic-Byway, is the breathtaking Cullasaja Falls. Not visible from the road and not easy to get to. Difficult to find parking, the hike is rather steep and can be challenging but not impossible. If you are up to the challenge, you won’t be disappointed.

Dry Falls is a stunning waterfall, in the Cullasaja Gorge. It flows over a cliff with a walkway behind the waterfall. It features a paved path and stairs with handrails and has an accessible observation area if you decide not to hike down.

Bust-Yer- Butt and Bridal Veil are a couple other waterfalls you will pass on the way to Highlands

Silver Run Falls is located a few miles outside the town of Cashiers. Short easy hike. The water cascades into a tranquil pool which is deep enough to swim, it also boasts a beach. Very popular for families, especially on those hot summer days.

Rainbow Falls is a majestic and gorgeous waterfall in the Pisgah National Forest in Sapphire, an all-time favorite. The trail is 1.5 miles and begins in the Gorges National Park. Make sure you wear good hiking shoes, bring a swimsuit, and water shoes, but only if you are a strong swimmer.  Pack a lunch and plenty to drink. There are lots of places to sit, relax and enjoy the view and spray from the water as it plummets down and cools you off. Continue the trail another 2.5 miles past Rainbow Falls, you’ll come to Turtleback Falls a popular sliding rock and swimming hole.

Sliding Rock is a unique natural 60-foot mountain water slide that empties in an 8-foot-deep pool. It is in the Pisgah National Forest just north of Brevard. Parking is limited and there is an entrance fee.
